How to add a shopping cart price rule in Magento
- From Magento Admin panel to Promotion→Shopping Cart Price Rules
- On top right click "Add New Rule"
- Fill in: Rule Information/Conditions/Actions/Labels
- Click "Save" button
Magento offers setting up different shopping cart price rules – an option extremely useful for store owners.
It allows store owners and administrators to create and apply different shopping cart price rules and determine different conditions for different buyers.
Also, setting up different rules allows you to add discounts, promotions and all sorts of benefits for your customers.
Let’s see now what you need to do to start configuring your shopping cart price rule.
First, navigate to Promotions and click on Shopping Cart Price Rules.
That action will take you to a new screen, where you will be able to see all of your previously created shopping cart price rules.
We want to show you how to add a new one, so now, you should navigate to the upper right corner of the page and click on Add New Rule orange button.
Go ahead and add details about your price rule, set up it’s name and description, determine it’s status, associate it to a website and choose a customer group.
We named our rule Retail and set it up as Active in the dropdown menu.
Then, we chose Retailer customer group.

Also, choose whether or not you will generate coupons.
If you choose to do so, you will have an option to determine how many uses per customer will you allow and for how long will the coupon be valid.
But, we will talk more about generating coupons in one of our next tutorials.
That is why, we will skip generating coupons for now.
Here, in the first place you should note this message: Apply the rule only if the following conditions are met (leave blank for all products).
So what you should do is determine what is the rule/condition that has to be fulfilled so that a particular action that we want to set up could be achieved.
You can set up a condition by clicking on a green radio button with a plus sign to open the list of rules to choose from.
Take a look:
We chose to give 20 percent of discount to all of our customers that have purchased items with subtotal that is equal or larger than 2000 USD.
That means that we have set up a condition that, if fulfilled, will result with a discount of a certain kind for a customer that we will set up later on.
Also, from the dropdown menu, we selected that it is going to be a fixed amount discount. (see the screenshot)
Note that you are not limited in any way, and simply by clicking on green radio button you can add as many rules as you want.

At this point you are able to set up how will the condition apply.
We determined that every customer with shopping cart subtotal that is equal or larger than $2000 will be eligible to obtain fixed amount discount that we have determined previously.
From the dropdown menu we chose that the discount will apply fixed amount discount.
In the tab right below – Discount Amount, we have entered the amount, and further more, we have the option to set up whether our discount will be valid for shipping as well.
We decided that it will not be applicable to shipping, so we marked No from the dropdown menu.
